TicketCity is a decent option if you’re looking to purchase theater tickets on the secondary market, but they lack some features and their services are not as easy to use as many other ticket sites. TicketCity has possession of the tickets they sell, so they can guarantee legitimate tickets and have more control over pricing than other marketplace ticketers.
TicketCity is specifically involved with premium College and Pro sports tickets, but they also have a large selection of theater tickets available. We found the final pricing for most theater tickets to be pretty competitive with other online ticket sources, though when we compared pricing for comparable seating for one show, the price was over double the price of others. In general, TicketCity offers a pretty good selection of ticket options, but the 20% service fee is pretty high in comparison.
Selling your tickets to TicketCity is much different than when selling from most other services. TicketCity will actually purchase your tickets from you outright rather than simply allowing you to use their service to list them yourself. This is nice for sellers because they don’t have to worry about whether the tickets sell or not and they receive payment immediately. However, TicketCity does not buy every ticket. Furthermore, TicketCity’s “competitive” pricing for big event tickets includes an average 30% cut from the ticket price. Since this price cut is pretty steep, we suggest you try and sell your big ticket items elsewhere.
One unique feature that TicketCity offers is free shipping. If you purchase your tickets and use FedEx 2-day shipping, TicketCity will cover the shipping cost for you. Overnight shipping is not covered and costs $15.
TicketCity also offers gift cards in any amount, the minimum being $25, which can be customized to include a personalized note. The gift cards can even be sent directly to the recipients.
TicketCity does offer quite a few theater tickets, but didn’t have any opera, ballet or dance events listed when we reviewed.
Locating the right tickets and purchasing them on TicketCity isn’t difficult, but could be easier. Searching is limited, but once you have found the ticket listings, they can be sorted by section, row, price and quantity available. Interactive seating charts are not available, but the existing seating charts can be zoomed in and out. Unfortunately, they usually have a large watermark over them, and are otherwise less effective. In fact, of the venues that do have seating charts, most of them are cut off at the bottom.
Because TicketCity is in possession of the tickets, you don’t have to worry about third-party ticket brokers. They also tout a 200% money back guarantee if they fail to successfully deliver the tickets you order.
TicketCity.com has a 128bit secure SSL encryption from VeriSign and is approved by the Better Business Bureau.
TicketCity does offer complete and thorough help online and over the phone. The help center includes a detailed FAQs section with helpful answers. TicketCity also has a nice section dedicated to ticket resale terms and how to avoid ticket scams.
TicketCity is a decent service for buying online theater tickets on the secondary market. The ticket prices are fair, but the 20% service fees certainly add up. TicketCity does offer free shipping. And if you have tickets to sell, you can sell them to TicketCity directly. And while this is helpful if you want to get them off your hands, it comes with a hefty 30% loss. For a better experience buying and selling theater tickets online, we suggest Ticketmaster, TicketsNow, and StubHub.
